Bridging Communication For Ukrainian Families
For the last three years, Pavel Mykhaylyshyn has fostered communications between children of Ukrainain descent and their parents. Some of these parents do not know English. With this in mind, Mykhaylyshyn and other teachers meet every Saturday during the school year to instill the basics and idioms of the Ukrainian language into the minds of their students.
This year, the class has 41 students ranging in age from 5 to 15. Some of them come from as far as 15 miles away. These children, divided into 4 groups, meet at Willard Community Center from 10 a.m. to noon. The students study from textbooks acquired from Canada and Ukraine.
Thanks to this school, numerous Ukrainians and anyone else in the area can learn a second language. Mykhaylyshyn believes that knowing a second language constitutes a definite advantage. "You can be an interpreter overseas and do better in your life later," he said.
Mykhaylyshyn expressed his gratitude for the use of the Willard Community Center. "We're so proud and happy with that building," he said.
